Interregional festival-contest “New-Siberian Transit” originated in Novosibirsk in 2010. The first festival opened on May 20th. But its true birthday is actually in spring of 2001. Then “Transit” was truly transit and nomadic. Each year “Siberian transit” was held on the territory of a different Siberian city: Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Omsk, Tomsk, Krasnoyarsk, Ulan-Ude. The latest, seventh festival took place in Barnaul. During festival days the host city was conventionally called the Siberian capital of culture.
At the beginning of 2000's the festivalinvented by Red torch's director Alexander Kulyabin became a breath of fresh air. Provincial theatres were disjoined, touring culture was forgotten. Regular summer exchange tours, directors' meetings, plenty of young stage directors' works (productions), communication between critics and small theatres' troupes — all that we now take for granted. All of that became possible due to "New-Siberian transit“.
Apart from the founder, “Transit” has got permanent curator — watchful eye, restless heart, aching soul — Irina Kulyabina. Years have passed, organizers have changed, but she has continued to conduct this affair, even though she hasn't been the “main lead” during last three festivals.
Another important fact about the traveling festival is that now it covers not only Siberia, but Siberia, also the Urals and the Far East. Hence the new name “New-Siberian”.
“Siberian transit” was being held annually, “New-Siberian transit” — once in two years. In the fall, six months before the festival, expert jury consisting of leading theatre critics starts travelling the country to watch plays in the most distant cities and towns. They risk being snowbound under Norilsk, frozen in the car in Khakassia or Magadan. But such work at this very festival help sunderstanding situation with theatres in the most part of Russia.
“New-Siberian transit” presents three quarters of the country and theatres scattered throughout the territory of more than thirteen millions square kilometers.
